Stormé DeLarverie is one of the most important figures of all time for the LGBTQ community and people NEED to know her story in order to fully understand where we are today. However, my mission with this book is to change that. Unfortunately, Stormé’s life story has not been accessible to most of us up until now and she was a very private person who didn’t live her life to stand in the limelight. She will not only be remembered as an influential figure but as an example of the possibilities life has to offer if you live it in accordance with your own truth! For these reasons and many more she is not just a changemaker in the LGBTQ+ community but a person who redefined the times she lived through. She spearheaded not only the drag show scene but is also associated with being the individual to set off the historical “stonewall riots”. Switching seamlessly effortless between the male and female looks and expressions, as well as bridging the very segregated white and black worlds, one could argue that what many would think of as a disadvantage was the very thing that made her so powerful and special. However, what makes her particularly unique is the fact that despite her racial identity and her coming out as a lesbian, she seems to defy the stereotype of the victim role and appears to have led a life of self-determination, choice and freedom.
